Open letter to the Pope Print E-mail

Farewell-to-Vatican
While the Pope is in the United States this week, we thought it appropriate to share with you this open letter signed by 38 leading Muslim scholars from all around the world, and endorsed by thousands of Muslim organizations including MuslimBridges.  You will surely be impressed not only by the positive tone and respect shown to the Pope, but also how every point of his misconceptions was countered with a sensible reply, using “reason and logic” as the best way to engage with the Pope.

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful,

And may Peace and Blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad

OPEN LETTER TO HIS

HOLINESS POPE BENEDICT XVI

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful,

Do not contend with people of the Book except in the fairest way ....

(The Holy Qur'an, al-Ankabut, 29:46).

Your Holiness,

September 12th 2006, we thought it appropriate, in the spirit of open exchange, to address your use of a debate between the Emperor Manuel II Paleologus and a "learned Persian" as the starting point for a discourse on the relationship between reason and faith. While we applaud your efforts to oppose the dominance of positivism and materialism in human life, we must point out some errors in the way you mentioned Islam as a counterpoint to the proper use of reason ,as well as some mistakes in the assertions you put forward in support of your argument.

Pearls of Wisdom

"None of you will enter paradise unless you believe and none of you truly believe unless you love one another"
Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

All humans are dead except those who have knowledge; and all those who have knowledge are asleep, except those who do good deeds; and those who do good deeds are deceived, except those who are sincere. [Imam Shaf'i]
