Elder Quentin L. Cook,
Assalamu alikum, Peace be to you
First, our condolences for the
passing of Elder Gordon B.
Hinckley.
Muslims and Mormons are enjoying
wonderful relationships and cooperation throughout the country. It
is very common for Muslims and Mormons to work together within the framework of
various regional interfaith councils, building bridges, and looking to provide
solutions to local issues ranging from helping the poor, to promoting peace and
cultural awareness. Both of our communities relate well to one
another, perhaps because we have much in common, our communities are similar in
size here in the US, and both hold dearly many of the same family values.
It is nice to know that many successful marriages between Muslims
and Mormons do exist today; in fact, a personal Muslim friend has the habit of
taking his Mormon wife to her Church every Sunday for over 20 years!
We
have a concern to bring to your attention, and hope to receive your
clarification.
Glen Beck professes to be a Mormon,
uses his radio, and CNN show to express his views. Realizing that
everyone is free to form their opinions, and accountable for their actions, it
is however important to note if certain positions are counter to the view of the
Mormon Church. Specifically on the issue which distinguishes
between Judaism, and Zionism. We are attaching with this letter,
a short
film - 9 minutes - offering a distinction between Judaism and
Zionism. Judaism which Muslims support as "people of the book",
and for centuries have protected Jews and embraced them as a valuable part of
the society, as opposed to Zionism, in which a 100 year old concept, often
misunderstood or confused with the Jewish faith, stands for racism, oppression,
aggression, and deception. Zionism is simply a concept against the
basic beliefs of the three Abrahamic faiths.
Glen Beck has become the mouth-piece
for radical Zionism, pushing their agenda day after day, night after night on
the air, trying to influence public opinion to buy into the essence of Zionism,
and blame the terrible consequences of Zionism on the victims of Zionism.
We
are respectfully requesting your support and clarification that Zionism and
Racism is a concept counter to the peaceful nature of your faith and beliefs.
Mormons also being subjected to terrible persecution in recent
history; perhaps make it even more important for the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints to reject oppression and mass persecution.
We
realize your church does not take a political stance, however this point in
question is relating to understanding your basic religious beliefs when it comes
to Judaism vs. Zionism.
It
is our hope that one day soon, a solution of equal rights, - one person one vote
-, will prevail in Israel / Palestine.
Elder Cook, thank you for your
consideration. We look forward to your reply.
May God Bless you.
Copy of this letter was delivered on the same day to Mr. Jim Walton, President
of CNN worldwide

Gentlemen:
We are
pleased to respond to your letter dated March 14th, 2008, addressed
to Elder Quentin L. Cook, one of the leaders of our Church.
Your kind sentiments
towards our faith and its members, as expressed in your letter, are very much
appreciated and reciprocated. We have
many wonderful Muslim friends and accord to them our fullest respect in
connection with their religious beliefs and patterns of worship. We disdain any discriminatory acts or attitudes
towards the adherents of any religion.
Glen Beck expresses
only his personal views when he speaks on CNN Television. He is in no way official representative of
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and his public expressions
should not be viewed as statements of Church positions.
We extend
to you our warmest regards and again express appreciation for your kind
expressions as to our Church.
Sincerely
Robert S. Wood
