smell-of-pain The casualty arrived with a fracture to his lower right leg, and server bruising on his right arm. The casualty was crying in pain, screaming, and asking was he going too died. He wasn’t. While I was treating him, I noticed how I quickly became annoyed by his fear of death, not his actually screams of pain. I tried my best to comfort him, not just because of his pain, because his intense fear of death bothered me. Laying there was a soldier who swore his life to his country, and yet laying on the trauma table in stable condition, he fears the ultimate sacrifice. I started to question; how are we going to patiently persevere against a determined enemy if we fear death in such a manner that we beg God for our life under these circumstances?

Indeed this American Muslim is a good friend of MuslimBridges, is also a commercial airplane pilot working for Northwest Airlines for nearly two decades. Occasionally, he is pushed over the limit by the extra "special care" received at airports security. His Islamic sounding name gives him away every time. On one of his long flights, he was accompanied by a co-pilot who shared few airport cafeteria meals over the years. This time, he noticed something quite unusual about this co-pilot. Several crosses were prominently displayed on his chest, one of which was a unique necklace featuring 2 connected crosses. Seeing the image of all these crosses, I thought to myself, this man must be a right-wing Christian extremist, said the Muslim pilot. The co-pilot quietly tucked all the crosses under his shirt. A long flight was about to begin, and a very long career was about to end.

That was little Adam's question for his mother when I came to visit their house, just before leaving the village of al-Tuwani for a brief trip home to the United States. Adam is three years old.
